September 23rd has been designated as the International Day of Sign Languages. Greek Sign Language is the natural language of the Greek Deaf community. It is a complete language, using the same types of grammatical mechanisms found in spoken languages.
Sign language is not just one. Each country develops its own, with different handshapes and alphabets.
In total, more than 300 sign languages are used worldwide!
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes and promotes the use of sign languages, clarifies that they are equal to spoken languages, and obliges the States Parties to facilitate their learning and promote the linguistic identity of the Deaf community.
